The Wheel Landing: Flying the Airplane All the Way to the Ground

Three-point landings get all the glory in tailwheel training. But wheel landings are the technique that separates pilots who fly tailwheel airplanes from pilots who fly in them. They're harder to do well, more satisfying when you do, and the right tool for a wide range of real-world conditions.

Here's what's actually happening — and what you need to do — when you put the mains down first.

What Makes It Different

In a three-point landing, you bleed off energy until the airplane is right on the edge of a stall, and all three wheels touch simultaneously. You're essentially falling onto the runway in a controlled way.

A wheel landing works differently. You fly the airplane onto the runway — mains first, at a slightly higher speed, with the tail still flying. The airplane rolls out with the tail up, and you let it settle when the speed comes down on its own.

That difference in philosophy — flying onto the runway versus settling onto it — changes everything about the technique.

Why Bother?

Two reasons: crosswinds and control.

A three-point landing puts the airplane in a high-drag, high-angle-of-attack attitude right at touchdown. In a crosswind, that tail wants to weathervane badly. A wheel landing keeps the wings flying a little longer, gives you more rudder authority, and lets you touch down at a speed where you have real aerodynamic control — not just willpower.

Visibility is the other factor. In a full-stall attitude, you can't see much runway ahead. Wheel landings keep the nose down so you can actually see where you're going during rollout.

The Approach

Same pattern, same aim point — but carry 5 to 10 mph more than your normal three-point approach speed. Not a lot. Just enough that the airplane has energy to spare at the flare and doesn't want to settle all the way to three-point on its own.

The extra speed also means more rudder effectiveness, which is part of why this technique works so well in a crosswind.

The Flare and Touchdown

At about a foot off the runway, level the wings. Not a full three-point flare — just fly it flat. Let the mains touch while the tail is still up.

Here's where most students get into trouble: the instinct on touchdown is to pull back. Resist it. Pulling back unloads the mains, raises the tail, and sets up a bounce. Instead, push forward — gently — to keep the mains loaded and the tail flying.

You're not trying to force the nose down. You're just preventing the nose from coming up until you want it to.

The Rollout

With the mains down and the tail up, you're in the most stable configuration the airplane offers: weight on the big wheels, tail high, full rudder authority, good visibility ahead. Hold it there.

Let the speed bleed off. Don't chase the tail down. When the airplane has slowed enough that the tail wants to come down on its own, let it. Fighting it at low speed accomplishes nothing and can lead to a swerve.

The whole sequence should feel like you're driving the airplane down the runway, not catching it.

What Goes Wrong

Balloon on the flare. Came in a little fast, or leveled off a little high. The airplane floats. Don't chase it down. Either add power and go around, or hold the attitude and wait for it to settle. Never yank it onto the runway.

Tail drops too early. Usually means you pulled back on touchdown, or your speed was marginal. The result is a bounce, a porpoise, or both. Prevention is carrying the right speed and actively keeping the tail up through forward pressure.

Wheelbarrowing. Too much forward pressure, usually at higher speeds. You'll feel the tail come light and the airplane start to roll on the mains and the prop hub. Ugly, potentially damaging. Ease up on the forward pressure and let the airplane fly in a neutral attitude.

When to Use It

Wheel landings are the right choice when the wind is above about 10 knots and variable, when you're landing on a surface that makes a bounce particularly unwelcome, or any time you want more control authority during rollout.

Three-point landings are elegant. Wheel landings are precise. Both belong in your toolkit — and knowing when to use which one is part of what it means to fly a tailwheel airplane well.
