Complex Endorsement

The complex airplane endorsement is a one-time logbook endorsement required before you can act as pilot-in-command of a complex airplane, per 14 CFR §61.31(e). It is not a certificate or rating and requires no FAA written exam or practical test — but it does require documented ground and flight training from an authorized instructor who certifies you as proficient in the operation and systems of the aircraft.

A complex airplane is defined as one that has all three of the following: a retractable landing gear, flaps, and a controllable-pitch propeller. Common examples include the Piper Arrow, Beechcraft Bonanza, Cessna 182RG, and Mooney series. The endorsement is valid for life and is not aircraft-specific.

For many pilots, the complex endorsement is a significant milestone — it's a prerequisite for the commercial pilot certificate and opens the door to a class of aircraft that is faster, more capable, and more systems-intensive than most trainers.

Per 14 CFR §61.31(e)(1), you must hold at least a student pilot certificate. The regulation specifies no minimum flight hours — only that an authorized instructor provide the required ground and flight training and find you proficient in the operation and systems of the aircraft.

One exception applies: per 14 CFR §61.31(e)(2), pilots who logged PIC time in a complex airplane prior to August 4, 1997 are not required to obtain the endorsement.

14 CFR §61.31(e)(1)(i) requires ground training as part of the endorsement process, and the authorizing instructor must find you proficient in the operation and systems of the aircraft per §61.31(e)(1)(ii). Ground training will typically cover:

  • Retractable landing gear systems — normal and emergency extension procedures, gear indicators and warning systems, and the discipline of a consistent gear check habit
  • Controllable-pitch propeller operation — understanding the relationship between manifold pressure and RPM, proper power management sequencing, and avoiding overboosting
  • Mixture management — leaning for cruise and descent in a higher-performance engine environment
  • Systems familiarity — fuel systems, electrical systems, and any aircraft-specific procedures relevant to the make and model you're training in
  • Aeronautical decision-making — gear-up landings are among the most preventable accidents in general aviation; we'll spend time building the habits, flows, and judgment that keep you out of that statistic

Flight Experience

14 CFR §61.31(e)(1)(i) requires flight training in a complex airplane (or a representative full flight simulator or flight training device) but specifies no minimum number of flight hours. The standard is proficiency, not hours. Most pilots complete the endorsement in three to five hours of flight time alongside thorough ground instruction, though that varies based on experience level and aircraft familiarity.

The endorsing instructor must log the training and provide a one-time logbook endorsement per 14 CFR §61.31(e)(1)(iii), certifying that you are proficient to operate a complex airplane.
